Post3. First Concrete Action: My First Strings Translated in Astra

The first real step

After setting up my account, it was time to make my first contribution, as required by the course I’m taking.

So I opened the Astra theme project for es_CR, filtered it by “Untranslated,” and started suggesting translations one by one.

First strings translated

My first translated string was a simple, straightforward job, and I was satisfied when I saw my name as the translator: smendez09. Seeing my username on a public contribution for the first time was a small but significant moment for me.

I continued with similar strings related to Astra header settings. Each one was moved to the “waiting” status, meaning it’s in the queue for approval by a translation editor on the es_CR team.

What I learned

The translation interface is simple, but it requires attention. Each string must match the tone of the original, and technical terms must be consistent throughout the theme. I started creating a mental glossary of recurring terms to maintain consistency.

In the next post, I’ll show more progress and describe what I learned while translating a larger batch of text strings.
