The first real step
After setting up my account and exploring the platform, it was time to make my first real contribution. I opened the Astra theme project for es_CR, filtered by “Untranslated”, and started suggesting translations one by one.
First strings translated
My first translated string was “Logo settings updated” → “Configuración del logotipo actualizada”. Simple, direct, and verified by my name appearing as the translator: smendez09. Seeing my username on a public contribution for the first time was a small but meaningful moment.
I continued with similar strings related to the Astra header settings. Each one went into “waiting” status, meaning it’s queued for approval by a Translation Editor from the es_CR team.
What I learned
The translation interface is straightforward but requires attention to detail. Every string needs to match the tone of the original, and technical terms need to be consistent across the entire theme. I started keeping a mental glossary of recurring terms to stay consistent.
What comes next
In the next post I’ll show more progress and describe what I learned from translating a larger batch of strings.
